The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has directed the reversal of the decision to stop collecting road tolls.
This decision comes after a similar directive from the Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, that all toll booths should cease collecting road tolls.
Mr. Amoako-Attah in a statement said “the Ministry of Roads and Highways hereby directs the cessation of the collection of road and bridge tolls at all locations nationwide”.
But during discussions on the floor of parliament, on Thursday November 18, stated that the minister’s actions were not right.
Speaker Bagbin therefore ordered for the minister’s directive to be suspended saying “I think that it is proper for us to direct the minister, a member of this house, in fact a senior member of this house, I think that he might have acted wrongly and therefore I call him to reverse this decision”.
While the minority leader, Haruna Iddrissu, quizzed the authority of the roads minister to issue such a directive, member of parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Agboza also sided with the speaker that Mr. Amoako-Attah’s action was in the wrong direction.
