Pupils of Prato no.1 D/A Basic School in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, are pleading with government to come to their aid by providing them more desk.
Prato no.1 is a scattered community with about 160 settlements in the Wassa East district and has only one school which is the Prato D/A basic school.
The school is in a derelict state and lacks desk.
A visit to the school by Angel FM’s Nana Fynn indicates that the pupils sit on the bare floor to study.
The lack of desks in the school, which comprises kindergarten, lower primary and upper primary, compels the about 40 pupils in a class to share five desks.
The pupils have, therefore, made the floor their alternative to avoid the discomfort that comes with being packed on a single desk in an era of the deadly Covid-19 disease.
The school building is equally old and very weak. It has cracks in them making it uncomfortable for teaching and learning.
Speaking to some pupils, they pleaded with the government to come to their aid and help them resolve their teaching and learning challenges.
“We plead with the government to provide us more desk to avoid others sitting on the floor,” they said.
Some of the elders in the community also called on government to help the school with some amenities and provide enough desks for the students.
“When you go to the kindergarten for example, there are no chairs and they sit on the floor to write. The situation is so bad that some of us don’t even want our children to come to the school”, an opinion leader lamented.
Another complained that beyond the dilapidated structure of the school, the school lacks toilet facilities and the students have to cross the Pra River before coming to school, a situation which makes learning unattractive.
