Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that the Akufo-Addo-led government is going to do everything possible to support those who have been injured and families that have been affected by the explosion at Appiate.
According to him, they have so far heard that at least 13 people have lost their lives while dozens have sustained injuries as a result of Thursday’s explosion, after an accident involving a truck conveying explosive material for a mining company, a motorcycle, and a third vehicle close to an electricity transformer led to the explosion.
The Vice President, who is currently at Appiate with a government delegation, has expressed condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives while describing Thursday, January 20, as “a sad day for Ghana and for all of us”.
Dr. Bawumia noted that “for the houses that have been destroyed, we are already beginning to think about how to rehabilitate and rebuild for the community”.
An earlier statement from the Information Ministry indicated that “several houses and structures in sections of the town have been destroyed and plans have been put in place to ensure that stranded community members are catered for in the coming days”.
Reports indicates that some of the displaced residents of Appiate are at a makeshift camp at the Bogoso St. Michael’s parish hall.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo in a series of tweets has commiserated with victims of the explosion disaster describing the incident as “a truly sad, unfortunate and tragic”.
He promised that government will spare no effort to ensure a rapid return to a situation of normalcy for residents of Appiate.
