The intended demonstration by the Coalition of Concerned University Students (CoCUS) over the conditions of University students on campuses, has been postponed.
The planned demonstration scheduled to take place Tuesday, February 8, 2022, was to see students march to the Jubilee House and Parliament to get government address their concerns.
According to a statement issued by the group, the Police said the public stands to be inconvenienced by the use of the approved routes, hence the decision to postpone their protest.
In the statement, the group accused the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of backing out on the agreed modalities for the demonstration and resorting to intimidation.
“We are equally expressing our revulsion at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for reneging on the agreed modalities for the demonstration and resorting to intimidation.
“The Coalition considers this as an attempt to prevent students from demonstrating and holding government’s feet to the fire. The presence of esteemed Officers of the Ghana Police Service on campus to serve this notice shows the level of desperation and the vile agenda to frustrate the demonstration,” it stated.
In this light, the group said it has further postponed the demonstration to Thursday, February 10, 2022, since it does not “want to fall without the context of the law” after the initially agreed routes were suddenly changed by the Police on Monday, February 7, 2022.
They also served noticed to join other groups on Thursday to fight for better conditions for university students.
“We shall, on Thursday, join various CSOs, youth groups, and the National Democratic Congress in its demonstration to register our disquiet. Our resolve to fight for the ordinary Ghanaian students is unquenchable, and we will through all means necessary, fight for that common interest” part of the statement added.
The leadership of CoCUS, therefore, assured it members and the entire student populace of their commitment and undying dedication to advocating on their behalf.
This becomes the second time the intended demonstration exercise by the group has been postponed after the first one coincidentally clashed with the ECOWAS meeting held in Accra following the recent coup in Burkina Faso.
