The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akufo Dampare, has advised banks to use fit-for-purpose bullion vans to transport bulk cash.
He offered this advise after a robbery attack on a bullion van on Tuesday was aborted by a Police Officer.
“Beyond the Police intervention, the armoured bullion vehicle used saved the lives of the officials and the Police officer on-board the vehicle even though the robbers fired into the van”, the police said in a statement.
According to the IGP, “it has, therefore, become necessary to re-echo the Police administration’s call for all financial institutions in the country to resort to the use of such fit for purpose vehicles for their cash in transit activities.”
Some armed robbers attacked a bullion van at Industrial Area, which led to some perons getting injured in the process.
The bullion van attack comes a few months after a police officer accompanying a bullion van was shot and killed at James Town by unknown assailants.
The incident had triggered some reforms with the police threatening to withdraw their services.
The police service and security experts cautioned the banking sector to use armoured vehicles in transporting bulk cash to safeguard lives of the escorts and prevent the rampant attacks by robbers.
The IGP, Dr. Akuffo Dampare assured the public that the Police have intensified efforts to get the perpetrators arrested.
The Police Administration also commended the Police officer whose intervention foiled the robbery incident.
