The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has counselled Ghanaians in Ukraine to obtain essential goods and remain in their homes following the military attack on Ukraine.

According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, government has noted with concern the deteriorating military situation in Ukraine which directly impacts on the security and safety of nationals, including the over 1,000 students caught up in the warfare.

In an attempt to protect its citizens, Government of Ghana has issued a statement cautioning nationals to restrict movement and seek government shelters in the interim while concrete steps are taken to permanently rescue them from danger.

“The Ghana Diplomatic Mission in Berne, Switzerland, has urged all Ghanaian nationals in Ukraine to limit their movements in public places as they obtain essential goods and to remain in their homes or move to government places of shelter,” the statement said.

“Our Diplomatic Mission in Berne, and our Honorary Consulate are directly engaged with the relevant authorities in Ukraine in an effort to secure the safety and protection of Ghanaian citizens there during this difficult period.”

Government’s concern follows a military assault on Ukraine by Russian forces with reports of explosions near major cities across the country.

Both the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) and Ghanaian students in Ukraine requested that government immediately evacuate nationals but Ghana’s Honorary Consul to Ukraine, Dr. Albert Kitcher has disclosed that evacuating Ghanaians in Ukraine is not possible since airspaces have been shut.

Madam Ayorkor Botchway addressing journalists admitted that it is difficult to move them but are still engaging authorities on it.
