The Divisional Chief of Okper, a suburb of Somanya under Yilo Krobo Traditional Area in the Eastern region, has lamented the prolonged chieftaincy disputes among chiefs in the area.

Speaking at press conference held at his residence, Nene Nanekey Terkpertey Ofori Agor IX disclosed that, the Yilo krobo Traditional Council has not been performing its functions for the past three years to foster development within the municipality due to the disputes.

According to him, nothing seems to be working in the municipality because there is no leader steering the affairs of the traditional council and work closely with the institutions and agencies in the municipality to perform their rightful duties.

He further said, the situation has led to a total system failure resulting in lack of progress and development in the area.

Nene Nanekey Terkpertey IX said that most leaders and authorities of Yilo krobo only pursue issues for their selfish interests but not in the interest of the people they serve.

This, he indicated is the reason for many unresolved challenges confronting the municipality.

However, Nene expressed his worry over drivers’ attitude of picking up passengers in the middle of the principal streets despite the availability of an allocated lorry station.

The Divisional Chief then cited the long-existing impasse between residents and Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) in the municipal which he believes if the traditional council has been in existence, the impasse would have been resolved.

He also underscored the irregularities in water flow from the Ghana Water Company that serves communities in the area [three weeks of water not flowing from taps] as a case study which leaders have failed to find a lasting solution to the menace.

Again, he wondered the high rise of alcohol and drug abuse among the youths in the area which he said nobody seems to care about.

That notwithstanding, Nene Nanekey Terkpertey IX, justified his claim by adding “for a municipality [Yilo] to be considered the worse performing municipality in Ghana, I don’t think it is the best.”

“There is no clear defined path So Yilo is in the doldrums, in the gutter and it is down and nothing goes on, the institutions are not working, any body does what he wants so Yilo I promise you if we don’t bring it up in the next 2 years we will not have Yilo krobo at all because we don’t have a traditional council” Nene Nanekey Stated.

He therefore called on authorities to find measures to the problems to help develop Yilo Krobo.
