The Ministry of Education (MoE) has refuted claims that Senior High Schools (SHSs) are currently facing acute food shortages.
The Ministry expressed shock at news publications and media discussions which purported closure of schools due to the food shortage.
According to Rev Samuel Pius Elewokor, the headmaster, the students were fed with only breakfast and supper which would not last beyond September 30, 2022, hence an emergency response was needed.
In a separate letter to the Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Educational Service, the Avatime Senior High School Management through the headmistress, Rebecca Mawusi Veny, indicated that as of September 29, 2022, the school had only four bags of maize, two bags of sugar and few tin tomatoes.
But in response, PRO for the Education Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng denied the media reports of food shortage.
In a statement, he said that “all Senior High Schools in the country have received adequate supply of food items.”
He however admitted that the Ministry “takes cognizance of recent disruptions within the food supply chain, but assures parents and guardians that they have been addressed.”
