The pilots of Kenya’s largest airline, Kenya Airways, will go on strike effective Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 6:00 am Kenyan local time.
The decision to embark on the industrial action stems from the displeasure of the members of the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) on the refusal of the management of Kenya Airways to give them better working conditions.
The members of KALPA issued a press release signed by their general secretary, Captain Murithi Nyagah, to this effect.
A section of the letter dated 4th November 2022 reads, “On October 19, 2022, the Association issued a 14-day industrial action notice to the Management of Kenya Airways, as the last resort in our attempts to seek better working conditions for our members and ensure that Kenya Airways is managed professionally.
“We hoped that the Management of the airline would soften its hard stance and engage in a negotiation on the issues raised. However, as we mentioned at our press conference on November 1, 2022, Kenya Airways Management HAS NOT made any MEANINGFUL attempt to engage and have these matters resolved”.
The strike is said in their press release to be in accordance with Article 41, Chapter 4 of the Kenyan Constitution.
KALPA also took the opportunity to apologize to the passengers for any inconvenience the strike would cause them and their travel plans.
