Office of the Special Prosecutor has counselled the general public that it does not need a warrant to effect an arrest on any offender in the country.
According to a statement issued by the Office, it can arrest any person it reasonably suspects of having committed corruption or corruption-related offences.
“The general public is advised that in exercise of its police powers, the Office of the Special Prosecutor can arrest without a warrant, any person it reasonably suspects of having committed corruption or corruption-related offences.”
The OSP’s notice comes after it on June 13, 2023, declared Charles Bissue, a former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining wanted.
However, an Accra Human Rights Court presided over by Justice Nicholas Abodakpi on Thursday, June 15, granted an application by Charles Bissue’s lawyers and issued an interim injunction to restrain the OSP and its agents from executing the arrest warrant they said to have obtained earlier.
“The Court has prohibited the Special Prosecutor from seeking further arrest warrants and publishing notices declaring the Applicant, Charles Bissue, as wanted until the substantive matter is resolved.”
The duration of the injunction is set for 10 days and the case has been adjourned to June 22, 2023.
