The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has denied predicting a two-horse race between John Mahama and Vice President Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 presidential election.
According to the Speaker, a recent report in the media said he had predicted a keen contest between the duo, however, the said report is not true.
He is said to have made the statement when he called on the Yagbonwura in Damongo as part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of uninterrupted Parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
Alban Bagbin in a rejoinder dated Thursday, June 15, 2023, said thus, “The attention of Parliament has been drawn to a report by Citifmonline that the Rt. Hon. Speaker has predicted that the 2024 presidential elections will be between the former President, John Mahama and the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.
We wish to place on record that although the Speaker made reference to the two politicians at the said event, it was not an exercise in prediction,” it stated.
The rejoinder added that he only suggested that what should be of interest to the people in northern Ghana, in which context he was speaking, is that they will be well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them.
He furthered on the explanation he gave that “despite political differences, we are one people with a common destiny. Our common goal therefore should be to work towards the common good of all Ghanaians, irrespective of our political differences.”
