The minority caucus in Parliament has indicated its resolve to abandon proceedings of the House to support its Assin North Constituency representative in court on any day.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, made the pronouncement when he was called upon to congratulate Mr Gyakye Quayson on his swearing-in as the elected member of the House.
Despite his election and swearing-in, Mr Quayson is standing trial at the High Court in Accra for alleged forgery and perjury in the run-up to the 2020 elections.
He has nonetheless pleaded not guilty to five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.
Against this backdrop, the Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Esiam Constituency stated on the floor of the house that so long as the criminal case proceeds, the caucus will not avail themselves in the House to do business.
“I wish to serve notice that the entire minority group will accompany our colleague to court today and any other day that he is to appear in court,” said Dr Cassiel Ato Forson on the floor of the House.
The MP added, “…and we will not participate in the business of the house anytime our colleague is in court and we will be withdrawing from the chamber after this ceremony if the court processes indeed happen today.
“Mr Speaker, amid persecution cooperation, will certainly suffer.”
