The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayensu Ntim has congratulated the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for breaking a perceived ceiling and becoming the Flagbearer of the party for the 2024 elections.
The Vice President made history on Saturday when he became the first person from the Northern part of the country to become the flagbearer of the NPP.
He polled 61% of valid votes cast at the party’s National Delegates Conference to become the first non-southerner to lead the Dankwa-Busia-Dombo tradtion since 1992.
His victory has caused many to claim that he was voted for because the NPP wanted to silence the NDC and several naysayers who always used the tribal card against the party.
Commenting on this on the Angel Morning Show on Monday, the National Chair of the NPP asked what the Flagbearer of the NDC will have to say now that a northerner is set to lead the party.
“Mahama had claimed Bawumia would not be elected flagbearer again because he was a Northerner…now I ask again, what is he going to say…,?” he queried in the interview with Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah.
He was optimistic the election of Dr Bawumia as flagbearer will see the ‘end to the tribal politics against the NPP’.
Stephen Ntim was hopeful the Vice President received enough endorsement from the delegates of the NPP to enable him put up a great fight that will see him beat John Mahama in 2024.
“Mahama schemed and blocked Duffour to win over 90% but we allowed a free and fair contest and that is what makes the NPP the democratic hub of Ghana…,” he said.
