The premises of Accra New Town D/A Basic School in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, have become a site for galamsey operations.
These illegal mining activities are taking place just about eight meters from the school.
The teachers who spoke with Angelonline.com.gh on condition of anonymity, expressed worry about the many pits that have been created by the ‘galamseyers’ around the school.
These dangerous pits are filled with water which can entrap some curious students, particularly during break periods.
The teachers are not the only people who have shown signs of perturbness about the situation but also the entire residents of Accra New Town.
The fears grappling with the parents keep intensifying since the illegal miners keep expanding their operational area into the school campus and it appears that the authorities have remained conspicuously silent about the situation since this started.
Some of the residents who spoke with Angel News blamed the District Chief Executive for Wassa East District, Emmanuel Boakye and the Queenmother of the area, Naa Akweiye Kua I, for allowing such grievous activities to go on in the school without showing concern.
However, Naa Akweiye Kua I, reacting to the accusations indicated she had no hand in it and also does not have the power to stop anyone from doing galamsey in the school.
She rather blamed the landowners who sold their lands for illegal mining.
Meanwhile, the DCE for Wassa East District, Emmanuel Boakye in response assured of drastic measures would be taken to curb the situation and also ensure perpetrators are arrested to face the full rigors of the law.
