General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin  Frimpong Kodua, has announced that the next NPP government will implement a flat rate system for imported goods at the port.

A flat rate system means that there will be a fixed price for goods imported, regardless of the service’s magnitude.

Mr Kodua highlighted previous achievements of the NPP government at the port, including the introduction of a free port and the removal of certain taxes from port duties.

“If you remember, when we came into power, we reduced some taxes at the port to lessen the financial burden of clearing goods.

“Unfortunately, we have faced challenges with import duties being charged based on the size of containers,” he explained in an interview with Okatakyie Afrifa-Mesnah on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

He added that under the next NPP administration, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as president, fixed prices will be set for various sizes of shipping containers, regardless of their contents.

“For example, if you are importing spare parts, there will be no need to examine what’s inside the container. There will be a fixed price for, say, a 20ft, 40ft shipping container, and that will be that,” he stated.

He also asserted that this flat rate initiative would help importers plan better and avoid extraneous costs associated with importing goods.
