The Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) across the country have been ineffective in the nation’s campaign to eradicate illegal mining, Nii Amasah Namoale has observed.

According to the former member of parliament for La DadeKotopon in Greater Accra, these government appointees have failed to live up to the expectations.

In a panel discussion to find solutions to the illegal mining on Angel Morning Show (AMS), Namoale believes the country would have achieved a significant milestone in the galamsey fight if MMDCEs were proactive enough.

“Since individuals in our various districts or municipal can’t embark on any activity without the consent of these MMDCES, it means they are responsible for overseeing these galamsey activities in their respective districts. The DCEs and MCEs have disappointed us in the fight for galamsey,” he said.

He rhetoric why other stakeholders such as those at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been so relaxed to act.

“This galamsey issue is a state affair, why hasn’t the Regional Environmental Officers taken action, or any minister in their areas caution them?”

The former parliamentarian proposes that “appropriate measures must be applied in the extraction of this gold” so that the environment is not destroyed beyond repair for future generations.
