‘Buy Ghana First’ policy will boost local businesses’ – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained that his ‘Buy Ghana First’ policy is designed to support local companies, particularly those in the textile industry, to enhance their competitiveness in the market.

Dr. Bawumia shared insights from a working visit to the Volta Star Textiles Factory, where he observed that the factory was grappling with demand challenges.

During an engagement with stakeholders in Juapong, located in the North Tongu constituency, he emphasized that the policy aims to boost demand for products from such factories, ensuring that local businesses have a stable market for their goods and can thrive in the competitive economic environment.

“The ‘Buy Ghana First’ policy was crafted to ensure that we create demand for local products, starting with industries like Volta Star and other similar factories,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

“When I visited the Volta Star Textile Factory Limited in Juapong months ago, before my manifesto came up. When I went there, it was a company that was in trouble because the demand for the products was not there.

“If it is school uniforms, we are importing these textiles from other countries and that becomes a problem for job creation. So I have a policy to support all Ghanaian manufacturers and that policy is the ‘Buy Ghana First’ Policy. For all that the government buys, and the government buys a lot, it means that the government must buy Ghana first.

“If there is a company making that product in Ghana, they will have to source from the Ghanaian market and if you are not able to produce in Ghana that is when you can look outside to buy from the foreign Market and I believe if the ‘Buy Ghana First’, companies like the Volta Star Textile Limited will survive because all the free SHS schools uniforms will be buying it from this company,”  he stated.
