The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGRD) has announced a significant restructuring of local governance across the country, with several districts and municipalities upgraded.
In a release issued on Friday, November 7, 2024, the Ministry confirmed that following a request by the Ministry of Local Government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the elevation of some districts and municipalities to metropolises and municipalities in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
The upgrades are as follows:
Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly becomes Kpone-Katamanso Metropolitan Assembly
Techiman Municipal Assembly becomes Techiman Metropolitan Assembly
Gomoa East District Assembly becomes Gomoa East Metropolitan Assembly
Upgrade from District to Municipality
- Bole District Assembly to Bole Municipal Assembly
- Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly to Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Assembly
- Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly to Atwima Kwanwoma Municipal Assembly
- Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly to Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipal Assembly
- Obuasi East District Assembly to Obuasi East Municipal Assembly
- Sekyere South District Assembly to Sekyere South Municipal Assembly
- Ningo-Prampram District Assembly to Ningo-Prampram Municipal Assembly
- Anloga District Assembly to Anloga Municipal Assembly
- South Tongu District Assembly to South Tongu Municipal Assembly
- Shama District Assembly to Shama Municipal Assembly
- Techiman North District Assembly to Techiman North Municipal Assembly
- Pru East District Assembly to Pru East Municipal Assembly
The changes are pending the finalization of necessary legal and administrative processes, after which the affected districts and assemblies will officially take on their new status.
The release signed by the sector Minister, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, also mentioned that the decision regarding the upgrade of Ho Municipality to a Metropolis, along with the consideration of Offinso North and Birim North Districts for Municipal status, are still under review.
In addition, petitions for the creation of new districts are under consideration.
This recent upgrade reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance and empowering communities across Ghana.
By granting metropolitan and municipal status to these areas, the local government administration aims to enhance service delivery, boost local economies, and ensure a more efficient allocation of resources.
As these communities transition to their new statuses, residents can anticipate improvements in infrastructure, public services, and overall quality of life.
