Aide to Alan Kyerematen, the leader and flagbearer of the Movement for Change, has clarified the controversy surrounding his boss’ recent criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

He stated that Mr. Kyerematen’s criticism was never intended as an attempt to seek endorsement from the former president, as the public had assumed.

“Alan, and indeed the ‘Afranfrato’, have never, at any point, sought or expected an endorsement from Papa JAK or any party leader still holding a constitutional position,” Nana Yaw said in a statement posted on Facebook.

He continued: “Personally, I believe that Alan has every right to defend his hard-earned reputation, his accomplishments, his incorruptible character, and, above all, his unparalleled contribution to the political journeys of Papa JAK, Nana Addo, the NPP, and Ghana as a whole.”

Nana Yaw Sarpong’s statement follows the public backlash against Alan Kyerematen after he questioned the former President’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Papa JAK has been both a leader of his political party and the president of the country which makes it two distinct roles.

At the time of his interview, the questions were directed to him not as a statesman, but as a card-carrying member and leader of his political party. As such, his responses had to be carefully worded and balanced to avoid upsetting anyone or risking the forfeiture of his membership under the party’s constitution.

Unfortunately, the election in December 2024 would not be based on what Papa is saying but on the issue of bread and butter, transformational vision, credibility, integrity, trust, Christ-like character and leadership qualities.

In Papa’s own words, the lack of continuity in government projects across different administrations, including his, even though his party has been in power for 8 years has resulted in substantial financial losses to the state. Furthermore, the troubling trend of corruption, and arrogance of power continues to deepen its roots in Ghana, and this is what Ghanaians will be voting against.

Papa JAK knows in his heart that, in terms of performance, carrying out responsibilities and assignments, achievements, and accomplishments, both in Ghana and internationally, Alan stands out and is peerless, not only during his own government but also under Nana Addo’s administration.

Alan, and indeed the Afranfrato, have never, at any point, sought or expected an endorsement from Papa JAK or any party leader still holding a constitutional position.

Personally, I believe that Alan has every right to defend his hard-earned reputation, his accomplishments, his incorruptible character, and, above all, his unparalleled contribution to the political journeys of Papa JAK, Nana Addo, the NPP, and Ghana as a whole.

If it weren’t for purposes of propaganda, I don’t believe anyone would have had an issue with the response by Alan.

Beyond defending his own position, Alan was also questioning the criteria that placed Alhaji whose only achievement, according to the interview, was to have read a report at a conference.

Meanwhile, Alan’s political achievements and integrity stand out, making him a key figure in Ghana’s political journey. The debate over leadership criteria highlights the need for merit-based selection rather than decisions driven by propaganda.
