The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, says the majority of colleague MPs have decided to safeguard their seats in Parliament by staying away from the discussion of illegal mining also known as galamsey in the country.
He stated that the decision of these MPs [name withheld] is the fear of losing their respective seats.
Mr. Acquah, despite his refusal to mention names of his colleague parliamentarians who made the vow, hinted at instances where some MPs lost their seats after condemning the galamsey menance.
“Today, I’m emphatically saying that most of the MPs said they’ll not comment on the galamsey menace again; they’re afraid to lose their seats. Most of the MPs who spoke against galamsey lost their seats,” he said on Angel TV, on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
He noted that the NPP in the 2024 elections lost most of its seats in the galamsey areas, which, he said, has made them reluctant to speak on any galamsey-related issues in the country.
The immediate past deputy Health Minister also highlighted the campaign promises of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at galamsey operating areas before the election that they would give miners the right to conduct their business.
Mr. Acquah, a situation, he indicated contributed significantly to the NPP’s defeat.
