President John Dramani Mahama has expressed the general public’s confidence in the senior national soccer team – the Black Stars, admonishing them to rediscover the glory days of making the country proud through football.
According to Mr. Mahama, Ghanaians still believe in the team and are ready to rally behind them to redefine its footballing prowess on the continent.
The President delivered this message when he visited the Black Stars at its training session on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, ahead of the team’s doubleheader in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers slated on March 21 and 24, against Chad and Madagascar respectively.
“I am here on behalf of all Ghanaians as the President of the Republic to just cheer you on and encourage you. Ghanaians have had their hearts broken by the fact that we didn’t qualify for the AFCON.
“We haven’t given up on you. We still believe that the Black Stars can find its glory again and it’s dependent on you,” he told the playing body.
Speaking further, the president urged the Black Stars to put behind the embarrasment of not qualifying to the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and focus on redemming itself by sealing a fifth world cup finals for the country.
“Let’s put the AFCON debacle behind us and let’s look forward and know that we can redeem ourselves. I know that in the World Cup qualifiers, you are going to redeem yourselves, I know you can do it; I mean you are all talented players.
“We are going to continue to support you not only for the World Cup but beyon and I’m sure that by the grace of God, we will find ourselves in the US” the President said.
Ghana have participated in four FIFA World Cup tournaments – 2006, 2010, 2014 and the last edition held in Qatar 2022 where Argentina won the trophy.
