It’s regrettable 2025 budget contains no allocation to fight galamsey – Minority

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has described as “totally regrettable” the government’s failure to allocate a budget for the fight against illegal mining, “galamsey,” in its maiden budget presentation.

According to the Minority, it was unfortunate that the 19 pages of the 2025 budget had no dedicated funds to addressing the menace that has plagued the country’s natural resources.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, March 27, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed their dissatisfaction with the issue.

“The biggest fish here is galamsey, and we can’t pretend about it. I’m disturbed; I have gone through all the 19-page reports and not a dedicated expression on galamsey; why?

This is a whole year’s budget and no dedication to the galamsey fight. It is totally regrettable, and you can’t justify this,” he stated.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri Member of Parliament (MP) called on the Finance Minister to reconsider this stance to ensure that adequate allocations are made.

“Speaker, I think there should be further engagement, and I employ the committee that they should further engage the minister. There should be a definite expression for the fight against galamsey.

“We can’t leave it as it is. Passing statements being made in this regard cannot hold and cannot justify the inactions,” he said further.
