The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the death of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed in the ring during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The deceased collapsed during the bout with Ghanaian opponent, Jon Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Oluwasegun, who seemed to have dominated the fight from round one, unfortunately met his untimely exit from the ring in round 3 (2 minutes 46 seconds).
He was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after first aid was administered to him.
“After applying the first-aid resuscitating process, the boxer was immediately transported to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival,” the boxing authority indicated in the statement.
It said the GBA president, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, promptly reported the incident to the Korle Bu police station and proceeded to help move the body to the main mortuary for preservation.
The statement, signed by GBA’s Director of Communication, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, added that the association further reached out to the General Secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), Remi Abodorin, regarding the situation.
“The GBA wishes to extend its condolences to the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and all boxing enthusiasts in Ghana and across the globe.
“There are several deaths recorded in the ring over the years, we pray to the Lord to help protect all boxers during fights,” it added.
The GBA indicated that an official cause of death is yet to be made available after the autopsy.
