Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana is set to roll out a groundbreaking series of passport reforms beginning Monday, April 28, 2025, with a major technological shift to chip-embedded passports.

Among the key changes is the official transition to chip-embedded passport, is an upgrade that aligns Ghana’s travel documents with international biometric security standards.

The digital enhancement is expected to facilitate faster, more secure identification processes at border crossings.

Additionally, the Minister emphasized that the reforms will also introduce 24-hour passport office operations, ensuring that services are available around the clock.

In addition, applicants will be able to opt for direct courier delivery of their passports, offering increased convenience.

Furthermore, an e-Tracking System will allow applicants to monitor the status of their passport application in real time, enhancing transparency.

The reforms also commit to processing and delivery within 15 days, a significant improvement from previous timelines.

Also, there’s an expected planned reduction in application fees, from GHS500 to GHS350.

However, this particular change is contingent on parliamentary approval when the House returns from recess and amends the Fees and Charges Act.

“This marks a new era in our passport service delivery. When we promise, we deliver,” the North Tongu MP added.
