Women empowerment in Akuapem South takes shape with MP’s ‘Mmea Mpuntu’ initiative

The lawmaker for the people of Akuapem South, Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu, has launched the ‘Mmea Mpuntu’, a Women’s Empowerment Initiative aimed at transforming the lives of women in the constituency.

This initiative, which fulfills a major campaign promise, is part of the MP’s broader agenda to uplift women by equipping them with practical skills and resources to become economically independent.

The ‘Mmea Mpuntu’ project is not only timely but also aligns with the national and global development goals.

It focuses on offering vocational training, facilitating access to reduced-interest loans, and providing additional support to enhance the socio-economic status of women in Akuapem South.

Providing an insight on the initiative, Madam Dziwornu explained that it “Aligning with SDG 1, 5, 8 and President John Mahama’s vision to improving the lives of women in Ghana.”

She emphasized that the initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to empowering women and improving their socio-economic well-being through vocational training.

“…Access to reduced-interest loans for women, additional support to improve their lives,” she added.

The MP also expressed her gratitude to supporting agencies such as the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) and the National Youth Authority (NYA) that have made the initiative possible.

“A special appreciation goes to the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) and the National Youth Authority (NYA) for the partnership. Your support towards this great initiative is very much appreciated.”

The launch of this initiative was marked with a special Mother’s Day celebration on May 9, 2025, which included free health screenings for women in the constituency.

Over 2,000 women participated in the screening exercise held at the Presbyterian Women’s College of Education, Aburi, marking a significant step toward improving women’s health and overall well-being in the area.

Madam Lawrencia Adwoa Dwiwornu also delivered on the ‘Adwoa Food Bank’ another campaign promise, aims to provide occasional support to vulnerable individuals in the area with food items.

Beneficiaries of this initiative include the aged, widows, and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
