The Government of Ghana has announced a significant shift in its approach to managing the conflict in Bawku and other affected areas, moving from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following a recent surge in violence.
According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communication, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the escalation threatens to derail the progress made through ongoing peacebuilding efforts. As a result, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to restore law and order and enforce intensified curfews to protect lives and property.
“The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement said, while assuring the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability in the conflict zones.
Government also commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts and expressed appreciation to all stakeholders supporting the peace process.
The statement highlighted that the combined efforts of Otumfuo, the Nayiri, and the Zugraana had brought the conflict close to resolution until recent killings disrupted the near-settlement, prompting the current decisive action.
“All parties are urged to refrain from violence and support the peace process. Residents are advised to fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace,” the statement noted.
The government acknowledged that the intervention may cause inconvenience to peace-loving individuals in the affected areas but emphasized that the enforcement actions are necessary for the greater good.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding all residents, including students, and ensuring lasting peace in Bawku and surrounding regions.
