President John Dramani Mahama has said democracy goes beyond holding elections, stressing that it must ensure accountability, fairness, justice, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
According to him, democracy encompass accountability, inclusivity, fairness, and the creation of an enabling environment where every citizen can aspire and achieve, regardless of their background.
“Democracy is not merely about elections, it is about accountability, inclusion, fairness and justice, creating a society where every Ghanaian can aspire and achieve regardless of their background,” he noted.
He delivered this message on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during the presentation of the Democracy Cup at the Presidency by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Bagbin.
President Mahama added that democracy thrives only when institutions are strong, transparent, and independent, stressing that leaders must resist the temptations of partisanship, authoritarianism, and impunity.
“May this Cup remind us daily that democracy is not an event but a living process, a process that we must all work together to protect and deepen for generations to come. Our duty is to govern with humility and place the interest of the people above all.”
Speaking directly to the youth, President Mahama said democracy is their inheritance but also their responsibility; therefore, they must value it, nurture it, and be ready to defend it with courage and conviction when called upon.
“This Democracy Cup is mighty because it speaks directly to the youth. Through football, it communicates that democracy, like sports, demands rules, fairness, discipline and respect for one another,” he added.
Highlighting its significant impact on nationalism, he said, “It teaches us that while competition is healthy, the ultimate goal is unity, progress and nation building.”
