Former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim, has expressed admiration for dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, noting that she earned her respect for standing firm in the face of pressure to resign.
Though Madam Hamdatu said she felt pained over the manner in which the case was handled, her respect for the former Chief Justice remained top-notch.
“As a woman, I feel pained, but I respected the woman one time for her refusal to resign; she ensured the matter came to a finality,” Hajia Hamdatu stated on Angel TV on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
She further expressed her belief that the decision to dismiss Justice Torkonoo was politically motivated, pointing to past threats allegedly made by government communicators while in opposition.
“Most government communicators said that the woman was going to be sacked if they had assumed power, so those ignorant of the law will definitely deem the dismissal as unconstitutional, as stated,” she explained.
She added, “I’m convinced that the grounds on which Torkonoo was dismissed were an agenda.”
Hajia Hamdatu also hoped that the next Chief Justice would not face a similar ordeal, stressing that political retaliation undermines Ghana’s judicial and democratic system.
