Mahama demands quality work and smooth traffic flow on Pokuase–Nsawam road
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

President John Dramani Mahama has urged contractors working on the Pokuase–Nsawam road project to ensure quality construction and proper traffic management to ease congestion for commuters.

The presidential visit follows government’s full financial commitment to the project, with the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, confirming that a total of GH₵809 million has been disbursed to the contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, as of August 4, 2025.

Speaking during the inspection of the road on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, President Mahama stressed that the road is an important arterial route because it connects the two biggest cities in Ghana.

He noted that any challenge with the project affects a large number of commuters due to heavy traffic.

“This road is an important arterial route because it connects the two biggest cities in Ghana. And so any challenges with this contract affect a huge number of commuters because of the heavy traffic that passes through here”

He added that government is concerned about complaints from the traveling public.

“And so we were quite concerned about the complaints that were coming from the traveling public. And so we are happy to see that the traffic is flowing”

He reminded the contractor that, while work must continue, site management is also important. They must ensure construction activities do not block the smooth flow of traffic.

“But what I say to contractors is, yes, we know you have work to do. But one of your duties too is site management to make sure that your work does not impede the flow of traffic. So you must make adequate arrangements so that even while you are working, you are creating the conditions for traffic to flow”

President Mahama also made it clear that government support comes with expectations for contractors.

He urged them to speed up work and use quality materials, as government is committed to paying them on time.

“So as government commits to pay you well, you too must commit to move faster on the road and also use quality materials. One of the major problems with road contractors in this country is the quality of material. And so you build a road. After a short while, the road starts to deteriorate. And so, I mean, your company is one of the well-known road construction companies in Ghana. And so we hope that this will be a mark of the quality of your brand.”
