The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has launched a full-scale investigation into a tragic boat disaster near Kete Krachi on Saturday, October 11, which claimed 15 lives after a grossly overloaded boat capsized on the Volta Lake.

Describing the tragedy as heartbreaking, the GMA announced the deployment of dedicated teams to probe the incident.

“A specialised team, including Maritime Inspectors and the Navy Task Force, to establish the cause and hold all responsible parties fully accountable. A Casualty Investigations Committee will be constituted with the Ministry of Transport to ensure urgent policy changes,” the GMA said in a statement.

The GMA also noted that it has rolled out stricter measures to launch a sustained lakeside safety enforcement operation, typically aimed at tackling overloaded boats and operators violating safety laws.

These offenders, the statement added, will have their boats seized and prosecuted in the process.

The GMA urged citizens to prioritize safety and avoid boarding boats that are visibly overloaded or lack lifejackets.
