Former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim Hussein, says the recent River Oti boat tragedy should serve as a lesson to the general public, ensuring that such a misfortune does not repeat itself in the future.

According to her, such lessons must begin with personal safety and security to facilitate proactive measures to tackle water transport in the country.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while discussing the matter, Madam Hamdatu emphasized calls for action to avert future tragedy.

Delving into the incident, she expressed her surprise at the remarks of Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, who asserted that the capsized boat driven by a 11-year-old boy was normal.

“In fact, I am not happy with what the Minister said; authorities should ensure that the right people drive boats and not children who are underage, so that such accidents can be prevented.

“If I am to travel by boat and I find out it’s a 11-year-old who is to drive, I will not board such a boat because safety first is always important,” Hajia Hamdatu told Saddick Adams, the host of the show.

She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the district, and thanked the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, for visiting the community and sharing words of sympathy.
