Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak has questioned the rationale behind the Education Ministry’s renewed focus on student grooming, particularly the enforcement of short hairstyles in senior high schools.
He challenged the link between hairstyle and moral development, asking,
“How does keeping kids’ hair short stop them from growing to be double-salary takers or corrupt politicians?” he quizzed in a Facebook post on Monday, October 27, 2025.
His remarks come in response to Education Minister Harruna Iddrisu’s recent vow that the government will not tolerate long hair in senior high schools, citing character moulding as the basis for the directive.
He argued that schools should instead prioritise civics, patriotism, and community service as more effective tools for shaping students’ values and behaviors.
“Are we all not sickened by the nauseating corruption in public service, lack of accountability and a complete breakdown of patriotism?” added Mr. Mubarak.
He further urged the Ministry to redirect its efforts toward substantive reforms.
He called for increased attention to Science and Math education through competitions and awards programs, improved wellbeing and supervision of teachers, especially in rural areas, and the creation of safe, conducive learning environments.
According to Mr. Mubarak, these are the foundations for nurturing disciplined, patriotic, and sharp students.
“That’s what mould kids into responsible and successful adults. Substance over perfunctory gestures in our educational system,” Mubarak emphasized
