The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has arrested a suspect for impersonation and operating fraudulent scholarship schemes.
The arrest was made in conjunction with the Secretariat and the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
According to the Secretariat, the suspect, identified as Emmanuel Ofori, had been defrauding unsuspecting Ghanaians of large sums of money under the guise of offering them scholarships.
“The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, in collaboration with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), has arrested one Emmanuel Ofori, an individual who has been operating fake scholarship schemes and defrauding unsuspecting Ghanaians of huge sums of money,” Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, said in a statement.
The Secretariat cautioned the public to remain alert and use only its official communication channel, scholarships.gov.gh.
It further implored victims or individuals who suspect any fraudulent activity in the name of the Secretariat and have relevant information to come forward.
“I encourage anyone who suspects or may have fallen victim to fraudulent schemes in the name of the Secretariat to report and submit any hard evidence that will lead to the apprehension and prosecution of the suspect.”
The Secretariat reiterated that it does not charge any fees for scholarship applications or awards and called for collective efforts to safeguard the integrity of the national scholarship system.
“Let us continue working together to expose fraudsters and protect the integrity of our national scholarship system.”
