A Senior Member of the United Party (UP), Henry Asante, has urged soldiers to treat civilians with empathy when dealing with them, especially those involved in the practice of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show(AMS) on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, about the attack on NAIMOS at Hwidiem, he said, “The soldiers should show human feelings… they should know whom they are dealing with.”
He condemned the people’s attack on the soldiers, but noted the need for soldiers to recognize that they are dealing with fellow humans, adding, “The anger of the masses fears no barrel of a gun.”
Mr. Asante expressed concerns about why the soldiers did not exercise restraint to determine whether the individuals were certified miners, since the incident occurred spontaneously.
“Did they check to see if they had certification? Since it happened spontaneously,” he added.
He stated that the soldiers were wrong to attack them and burn their mining camps, suggesting that they might have contained copies of the miners’ certificates.
“Why burn their edifice? Maybe the house they burned might have a replica of the certificate in there,” he pointed out.
He highlighted that we must respect and protect the soldiers equally because they protect the nation.
