Deputy General Secretary of the United Party (UP), Nana Yaw Sarpong, asserts that recruitments into Ghana’s security services must be modernized with strategic plans to prevent a repeat of the El-Wak stampede incident.
Speaking on Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, November 13, 2025, he emphasized the need for the Ministry of Interior (MOI), to develop strategies by creating divisions to help reduce excessive pressure in specific areas during the recruitment exercise.
“The Ministry of Interior should develop a proper strategy by dividing recruits into zones across Accra. We don’t want to see such incidents in future recruitment processes,” he urged in his suggestions.
Mr. Sarpong noted that other jurisdictions maintain effective and flexible recruitment processes, providing civilians with the opportunity to join the security services
“In some jurisdictions, they visits church, tertiary institutions to speak to civilians to come and join the Army,” he disclosed.
Touching on President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the victims at the 37-Military Hospital, he stated that is reflects his goodwill and strong commitment to service whiles responsive to national issue.
“When even a single life is lost, a President with a conscience and genuine concern for the people must act and respond.
“We need to applaud President John Mahama because his visitation to the injured victims at the 37 hospital was a clear demonstration of his priorities,” he commended.
