The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the SIC Life Insurance Ltd (SIC Life) have taken a significant step towards securing the future of Fire Officers by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Life Insurance.
The MoU, signed at the Ministry of the Interior, also establishes a Welfare Fund for Fire Officers, which will be funded by the total annual premium received from GNFS.
According to the ministry, this initiative is expected to provide much-needed support to retired service officers and their families.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, expressed his gratitude to President Mahama for his support and vision for this initiative.
He commended the Chief Fire Officer, Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, the first female to hold the position, for her outstanding work and dedication to the Service.
Mr. Muntaka emphasized the high risks faced by fire officers in the line of duty and stressed the importance of providing them with insurance cover to support and encourage them to continue serving the nation with courage and dedication.
“This MoU is a significant milestone in the history of the GNFS and SIC, and it is expected to strengthen the relationship between the two institutions.
“It is also a testament to the government’s commitment to protecting and supporting its security personnel,” he stated.
The Chief Fire Officer, in her remarks, expressed her gratitude to SIC for the collaboration and assured that she will do everything possible to ensure the success of the insurance scheme.
The Managing Director of SIC, Mr. Solomon Twum Barimah, thanked the Minister for the initiative and noted that the insurance package will cover critical illnesses.
He assured that SIC will continue to enhance the package to reflect the valuable contribution of fire officers to the national agenda.
The insurance scheme is expected to benefit all staff of GNFS, and SIC Life will engage with staff to educate them on the scheme and its benefits.
As part of the initiative, the GNFS will also set up a welfare fund to support retired officers, which will be administered by the Chief Fire Officer.
