The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has said government will implement a 120% increase in NHIS tariffs from next year to improve healthcare delivery and sustain service providers.
Addressing the press during the Government Accountability Series, the minister said government has made a significant commitment to stabilising and strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to him, the decision follows longstanding concerns raised by service providers that the current tariffs are “unrealistic” and do not reflect the true cost of healthcare delivery.
The Health Minister further noted that government’s reforms within the NHIS have restored confidence in the system and significantly expanded national coverage in under a year.
He explained that the administration inherited a troubled insurance scheme characterised by capped funding, delayed payment of claims, unrealistic tariffs, and widespread co-payments.
He added that the frequent threats by health facilities to suspend services due to non-payment of claims have now become a thing of the past.
