Residents of Asuokaw in the Upper West Akyem District in the Eastern Region have called on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his promise made to the people by constructing their long-awaited footbridge.
It is recalled that in February 2025, the President made the pledge in a Facebook post when reacting to a video of pupils crossing a river using a fallen tree trunk to access education.
Mr. Mahama indicated that the community had been identified, with immediate steps underway to provide a lasting solution, emphasising his Resetting Ghana agenda to remove obstacles to education and healthcare to ensure every Ghanaian has equal opportunities.
However, after 10 months after the promise, there is nothing to show regarding the footbridge in question.
In a recent visit to the community by journalists, the people expressed their concerns over the absolute lack of progress on the bridge and further pleaded with the President to remember his promise.
“He [President Mahama] promised to construct a bridge here, we are pleading with him not to forget his promise. We will plead with the government, it looks like he has forgotten about us, looking at how he actively wanted to construct the bridge in the beginning, since they came to inspect this place they’ve not stepped foot here again,” a resident stated.
The residents expressed disappointment at the unfulfilled promise, adding that Ghanaians voted for the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to the trust reposed in them.
“We are disappointed in them, because we voted for them with the knowledge that, the bridge would be constructed for us but till now we’ve not seen anything,” they expressed.
