Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has directed the Accra and Tema Regional Police Commands, together with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, to intensify measures aimed at ensuring the free flow of traffic during the upcoming Christmas festivities.
The Minister noted that the festive season is often characterized by heavy vehicular and human movement, which requires proactive steps to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
She emphasized that residents and visitors must be able to move about safely and efficiently without unnecessary obstruction.
“I have directed the Accra and Tema Regional Police Commands, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to implement enhanced measures to guarantee the free flow of traffic throughout the festive season,” she stated.
To this end, Madam Ocloo announced that additional MTTD personnel will be deployed to manage congestion hotspots, including major intersections, marketplaces, malls, restaurants, clubs, and pubs.
She added in her capacity as Chairperson of the Regional Security Council, she will ensure that patrols will be intensified, with strict enforcement of traffic regulations to maintain order on the roads.
The Minister further directed that all abandoned vehicles along principal streets be towed to the nearest police command, with owners fined GHC2,000 to ensure unobstructed vehicular and pedestrian movement.
She appealed to commercial drivers, traders, and event organizers to avoid activities that disrupt traffic flow, warning that indiscriminate parking, unauthorized street trading, and obstruction of pavements will not be tolerated.
Madam Ocloo also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, assuring that such reports will be treated with urgency.
She stressed that the directives are not intended to inconvenience the public but rather to “safeguard lives, protect livelihoods, and create a conducive environment for socio-economic activities” during the festive season.
