The new regional passport offices created in six regions are nearing commissioning, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed.
According to him, the commissioning, which is imminent, will be done within this month, December 2025.
The beneficiary regions are as follows: Savannah Region, Bono East Region, Ahafo Region, Oti Region, Western North Region, and North East Region.
This initiative, which forms part of the government’s efforts to improve passport services, was announced in June earlier this year by Mr. on the floor of Parliament.
“As part of our efforts to decentralize passport delivery and ensure equitable access to passport services, the ministry plans to establish passport application centers in the six regions that were newly created that do not have passport application centers.
“They are Savannah Region, Bono East Region, Ahafo Region, Oti Region, Western North Region and the North East Region,” he declared on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
Six months on, the minister, in an update, stated that the project will be commissioned soon and handed over for operations.
“Our New Passport Application Centres in all 6 newly created Regions are ready for commissioning this month of December,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote in a post on Facebook, Sunday, December 7.
He described the initiative as unprecedented in the country’s passport system, expressing pride in ending the challenge of moving from region to region to access biometric registration.
“This is the first time in Ghana’s history that all regions will have their own Passport Application Centres. No need to travel hours to another Region to have your biometrics captured.”
Mr. Ablakwa added that this, among other measures including the reduction of Passport Application Fees by 30% — from GHS500 to GHS350 — is a fulfillment of a promise to Ghanaians following their overwhelming endorsement of the NDC in the 2024 elections.
“Today, December 7 is exactly a year since you overwhelmingly voted to reset Ghana — we are determined to create that new Ghana and never to take your massive support for granted.
“Yes, I know this great development is also timely and fortuitous as Ghanaian football fans from all over Ghana prepare to go support the Black Stars in the US and Canada. For God and Country,” he said while reflecting on a year in power.
