President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned against growing calls for the closure of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing such demands as premature and potentially harmful to Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
Speaking on recent controversies surrounding the OSP during a courtesy call by the National Peace Council at the Presidency on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Mr. Mahama emphasised that the office remains a vital institution in the country’s fight against corruption.
“I think it’s premature to the closure of that office adding that the unique thing about that office is the only anti corruption agency that has prosecutorial powers to be able to prosecute themselves without going to the Attorney General,” he noted.
He explained that the OSP is the only anti-corruption agency in Ghana with the independent authority to prosecute cases without seeking approval from the Attorney-General, a feature he says is crucial for maintaining public trust.
