Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, boasting 50.6% support among the general population, according to a recent survey by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana (KAS).
Released on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the survey indicates that Dr. Bawumia commands an impressive lead of 69.7% over his rivals among NPP delegates, solidifying his position as the favourite to win the primaries on January 31.
In the delegate poll, Dr. Bawumia received 67.8% of the votes, leaving his closest competitor, Kennedy Agyapong, trailing at 21.3%.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed with 6.6%, while Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong each garnered less than 5%.
Among the broader Ghanaian populace, Dr. Bawumia’s support stands at 50.6%, contrasted with Kennedy Agyapong’s 29.8% and Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s 8.7%, with other candidates polling in single digits.
With a consistent lead in independent surveys leading up to the NPP presidential election, Dr. Bawumia is positioned as the strongest candidate for the party’s nomination in the 2028 elections.
The KAS survey gathered insights from over 5,000 NPP delegates and more than 13,000 citizens (non-delegates), reflecting “a highly inclusive and diverse national sample with strong representation across all age groups,” particularly focusing on those aged 26 to 55 and encompassing urban, peri-urban, and rural areas (41% rural).
The demographics also included “different educational and employment backgrounds, religions (Christian 74%, Muslim 22%), and all ethnic groups,” ensuring that the results represent a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society.
