The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that a domestic fire outbreak at Abuakwa Manhyia near Wadoma Hotel in the Ashanti Region claimed six lives in the early hours of Monday, December 22, 2025.
In a press release issued by the Ashanti Regional Headquarters, the Service described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the affected family.
“The Ghana National Fire Service regrets to confirm a fatal domestic fire outbreak which claimed six (6) lives at Abuakwa Manhyia… We share in their pain and mourn this painful loss with them,” the statement read.
The fire involved a seven-bedroom self-contained residential building owned by Mr. Kusi Abayie and occupied by Madam Mary Serwaa and her family.
Despite the swift response, the building and its contents were completely destroyed. Firefighters retrieved six badly charred bodies, believed to be members of the same family, and handed them over to the police.
The GNFS noted that investigations into the exact cause of the fire are underway.
“The adept firefighters were able to prevent adjoining properties from being ravaged by the fire. The exact cause of the fire is being investigated,” the statement added.
The Service also cautioned households about the risks posed by heavy burglar-proof installations and reinforced doors, stressing that while security is important, such features must not hinder escape or rescue during emergencies.
