The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to multiple cases of ATM card theft during the recently held Diaspora Summit 2025.
Police say the suspect employed deceptive methods at ATM locations, deliberately creating difficulties for users before approaching them under the guise of offering assistance.
According to a police statement, the victims were then tricked into swapping their ATM cards, which the suspect allegedly used to withdraw money at several locations.
Police further suspect that he stole ATM cards and valuables during conference breaks by accessing participants’ bags and laptops.
According to investigators, the suspect gained entry to the Diaspora Summit through the open online registration process.
“Registration for the Diaspora Summit 2025 was conducted online and open to the general public without restrictions, which made it possible for the suspect to register and gain access to the event,” the event organizer explained in a police statement.
Following his arrest, police escorted the suspect to his residence at Ashale Botwe, where a search uncovered eight ATM cards belonging to different individuals. These included cards from GCB Bank, ABSA, GT Bank, and Fidelity Bank.
The recovered items have been retained as exhibits while police formally engage the respective banks to trace the rightful owners.
In a public statement, the Accra Regional Police Command assured citizens of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, particularly during major events.
“While adequate police presence is provided to ensure security, the Command cautions the public to remain vigilant, keep their personal belongings and valuables under close supervision at all times, and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the Police,” said Ms. Juliana Obeng, Superintendent and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
The Police Command emphasized that investigations are ongoing and pledged to update the public as new developments emerge.
