Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has called for the establishment of an independent body to manage the Ghana Premier League (GPL), stressing that such a move would enhance professionalism and transparency in the domestic top flight.
According to him, recent government investment in the league presents an opportunity for structural reforms, which should include separating league management from the Ghana Football Association’s secretariat.
Mr. Afriyie argued that an autonomous body dedicated solely to running the Premier League would allow for more efficient administration and accountability, while ensuring the league operates on professional standards comparable to international best practices.
“With the government now investing in our league, I believe the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) must set up a different body to run the league. The Premier League must be independent. It should be managed by an autonomous body to ensure professionalism and transparency.
“The league should be separated from the secretariat of the Football Association, and the autonomous body should be reporting to the General Secretary [Prosper Harrison Addo],” he noted.
The failed GFA presidential candidate maintained that separating the league from the GFA’s administrative structure would strengthen governance and boost confidence among clubs, players, sponsors, and supporters of the Ghana Premier League.
