The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed concern over reported military strikes carried out by the United States against targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In a statement dated Saturday, February 28, 2026, he described the development as “an escalation that marks a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East.”
He called for restraint and sustained dialogue among all parties, urging them to act in accordance with the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security.
Mr. Ali Youssouf warned that further escalation could threaten global stability, with serious implications for energy markets, food security and economic resilience, particularly in Africa.
He also urged all concerned actors to prioritize diplomatic engagement, including ongoing international mediation efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman, to prevent further deterioration and uphold the international rules-based order.
