President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound respect for Lincoln University despite the institution’s recent withdrawal of an honorary doctorate conferred on him.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian in community in Philadelphia on Friday, March 27, 2026, he recounted the historic ties between Ghana and the Pennsylvania-based university, noting that Lincoln University had invited him for the honor.
“Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart because those are hallowed grounds for Ghana; it’s part of our history. We cannot divorce Lincoln University from the history of Ghana,” the President highlighted.
President Mahama emphasized that the university’s pivotal role in nurturing Ghana’s first President, whose Pan-Africanist spirit sparked the deliberation of the African continent.
“Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah nurtured with his intellectual capacity and his pan-Africanist spirit, and it was from there he took that spark and led a deliberation struggle not in Ghana but across the African continent,” he added.
President Mahama’s reaction follows the controversy surrounding the honorary degree that was withdrawn from him over allegations that he holds anti-LGBTQ views.
