Akosombo Dam Spillage was the safest to avert catastrophe – Energy Minister

Spillage of the Akosombo Dam averted catastrophic says Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, better known as NAPO, has debunked allegations that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region had knowledge of the ongoing power outages there.

The claims alleged that NAPO, together with some NPP members, met District Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and offered them money to deliberately keep the lights off in their districts.

However, the former Energy Minister rubbished the allegations, stating unequivocally that they are “entirely false, malicious, and without any basis in fact.”

According to him, not only do the claims amount to palpable lies, but they also carry dangerous implications for the integrity of ECG officials.

He disclosed that he has instructed his legal team to initiate action against those behind the spread of the allegations.

“I have therefore instructed my lawyers to commence the necessary legal processes against the radio and television station involved, as well as the presenter responsible for making these claims.

“To compel them to substantiate these allegations with credible evidence or face the full consequences of the law,” he posted on Facebook, Friday, May 8, 2026.
