Twelve people have been confirmed dead and 44 others injured following a fatal road traffic accident at Konongo Anglican Basic School in the Ashanti Region in the early hours of Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the crash occurred around 12:07 a.m and involved three vehicles: a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck transporting tomatoes, and an empty fuel tanker.

According to a situation report from GNFS, personnel arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m and found the vehicles mangled after a head-on collision.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the DAF cargo truck was travelling from Kumasi towards Accra when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle on a slope. The driver lost control and collided head-on with the Tata passenger bus which was travelling from Accra towards Bole. The empty fuel tanker later ran into the accident scene but GNFS said it “did not significantly contribute to the casualties.”

GNFS confirmed 12 fatalities: 9 males and 3 females. 44 persons were injured, with 30 of them in critical condition. Emergency responders evacuated the injured to Asante Akyem Government Hospital, which received 32 casualties, and Steward Hospital, which received 12 casualties.

Firefighters, together with other emergency agencies, carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and secured the scene to allow for evacuation and restoration of traffic flow. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
