The Mobile Phones and Accessories Dealers Association (MPADA) has waded into the intensifying debate over foreign dominance in Ghana’s retail space and spotlight the long-standing challenges affecting traders at Circle’s bustling commercial enclave.

At a press briefing on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Tip Toe Lane, Accra, the association urged enforcement of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) law and addressed mounting difficulties faced by local traders.

The event highlighted issues including poor sanitation, theft, community neglect, and the growing dominance of foreign retailers, concerns that have gripped the business community for years.

Organizers emphasized the need for transparent dialogue and a shift in public perception regarding the plight of indigenous traders.

Addressing the media, MPADA Chairman Eric Gyamfi stressed that the association’s decision to join the national conversation followed several failed attempts by stakeholders.

According to him, other trade bodies, such as the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA), had taken various approaches to resolving the matter, though with limited success.

“Other trade associations, like GUTA, have already weighed in on this issue, and the discussion has gotten pretty intense. Now, we’re here to set the record straight and share our position,” he addressed.

Mr. Gyamfi, referencing the pressing issue, cited Section 27 of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act 865, which reserves retail business for Ghanaian citizens.

He asserted that foreign participation in retail violates this legal provision and called for urgent institutional action.

“We urge the GIPC, government, and regulatory agencies to take action ensuring Ghanaians benefit from the economy and stop foreigners from dominating retail business,” he mentioned.

The association expressed hope that collaborative efforts among stakeholders could safeguard Ghana’s retail sector from persistent tensions and regulatory lapses.
